Step 1: The inquiry — what to have ready
Every booking starts the same way: you reach out with three things — your date, your venue (or the town, if you're still deciding), and roughly what you're picturing. That's genuinely all a DJ needs to tell you two important things: whether the date is open, and a realistic quote.
You don't need a finalized guest count, a Pinterest board, or a song list yet. When should you start? Popular dates go months ahead — spring and fall Saturdays in New Jersey are the first to disappear. Step 2: The consultation — a conversation, not a sales pitch
This is the step couples are most nervous about, and it should be the easiest. A good consultation is a free, no-pressure call where the DJ mostly listens: how do you picture the night? What's the vibe — elegant and classic, high-energy, a bit of both? What songs matter to your families? What do you absolutely not want to hear?
It's also your interview. You're checking for the things a website can't show you: Do they actually listen, or do they talk over you? Do they MC as well as DJ? What happens if equipment fails? (The answer you want: backup gear at every event.) And are they insured — many NJ, Staten Island and Brooklyn venues require a certificate of insurance from vendors.

Step 3: Locking the date — contract and deposit
Here's the part that surprises people: a verbal "you're booked!" doesn't hold your date. In this industry, a date is held by two things: a signed agreement and a deposit (usually a set amount or a percentage, with the balance due near the event). Until both are in, a DJ can — and eventually will — give that Saturday to the next couple who signs.
The agreement should spell out the date, venue, hours of coverage, what's included (sound, MC services, lighting, any enhancements), the payment schedule, and what happens if plans change. Read it. A one-page handshake deal is a red flag; so is a DJ who doesn't use contracts at all.

Step 4: Planning — between booking and the wedding
This is the longest stretch and the one nobody explains. Booking a professional DJ isn't "pick a package, see you in June." Between the deposit and the big day, expect:
